Membership for the California Rescue and Paramedic Association
March 01, 2008 - After months of deliberation and hard work, the San Francisco Paramedic Association has announced that the California Rescue and Paramedic Association (CRPA) is enrolling new members. Formed the 1982, the CRPA was the de facto State EMS Association, representing the professional interests of the EMS provider at the state EMS commission and presenting an annual EMS education conference. During the mid 1980s membership had reached well into the hundreds; however its numbers dwindled throgh the 1990s. "It's a shame that this state does not have an active state level EMS association," says Art Hsieh, SFPA Chief Operating Officer and CRPA chair. "EMTs and Paramedics work in private and public sectors, and each employer side is well represented at the state level. However, there is only one seat at the EMS Commission that represents the EMS provider's professional interests, which is held by the CRPA. We felt that it was important to continue to have the CRPA be an active organization and hold that seat."
The SFPA has donated a limited amount of financial and logistical support to the CRPA, to help build membership. The interim Board of Directors intent is to have the CRPA to elect its own board of directors once membership reaches a size large enough to support limited operations. "It is important for the CRPA to be able to stand on its own merits," stated Mr. Hsieh. "Once it does, the membership should be self-determining in its direction and vision."
